The Ontario Hockey Academy is pleased to offer a program for post-graduate students.

This demanding program is designed for student-athlete wishing to improve their academics

and athletic standing. Like the regular high school program the post-graduate program

consists of academics, athletics and university preparation/placement.


What is a Post-Graduate (PG) Year ?


I consistently receive questions about the Post Graduate(PG) Year from players who are wondering if it would be a good idea for them. A PG year year is when a students decides to do an EXTRA high school year for several reasons. Both my daughters did a PG year and was beneficial. The PG year is geared toward those who wish to further improve their hockey abilities in order to get a Junior and University coach's attention. A PG year will also be used to improve maturity, strength, study skills, and academic abilities before embarking on college. In simplest terms, a post-graduate or PG is a student who has chosen to take an additional year of secondary school and to improve and hone their hockey skills before moving into a Junior or University team. Some are late bloomers, some were under-recruited, and feel they would benefit from another year of hockey development.


With many Junior and University hockey teams seeming to get more competitive each year, the PG year is a good choice for those who want to improve their hockey profile before Junior and university. There is no doubt that some of the top players today have benefited from an extra year of high school, but that does not mean a PG year is right for everyone. Just as we urge families to do their due diligence in the college search process and find a school that is the right fit, we do the same when they consider a Post Graduate year.

All students must adhere to the OHA Post-Graduate ("PG") Policy

Fall Semester
Post-graduate (PG) students attending OHA must take a minimum of three courses during the Fall semester. PGs are not required to take the physical education course (PAF4O) for credit or attend the health portion of this course. However, they are required to attend the gym workouts associated with PAF4O (which are part of the off-ice training program for their team).

PGs may take any high school courses offered at OHA, online high school courses or online college level courses as part of their three course minimum (please discuss this with the principal in advance so the courses chosen are consistent with future academic plans). However, students are responsible for any/all fees associated with the delivery independent study (online) high school or college level courses.

The OHA teachers are available as support for PGs taking independent study courses. The PGs are expected to complete these courses largely as independent work, and to rely mainly on any teaching support offered by the independent study course supplier. PGs are expected to make timely progress and to perform satisfactorily on all courses (whether they are offered locally at OHA or online as independent study) just as all of the other OHA students. Similarly, poor progress and/or performance could lead to a loss of ice time. All coursework must be completed by the end of the first semester.

Spring Semester
PGs are not required to take any academic classes during the Spring semester, however they are expected to leave OHA at the end of the OHA hockey season. Extensions can be granted if PGs take a full class load and maintain good academic standing.

The post-graduate year, while a great and little known tool, is exactly that, a tool. It is not a magic wand. Players and families must enter the potential of a PG year with eyes open and heads up. Parents and students need to articulate their goals from the outset. Know the goals before the start; evaluate and study the goals, and make sure that they fit with what the school can provide and the student can achieve. Hidden and poorly articulated goals lead to negative experiences. Dream and work hard toward the PG year goals, use the extra time wisely and it can be extremely beneficial.

Being one of the 1% to earn an NCAA Hockey Scholarship to University of New Hampshire would have never been possible without making the decision of a Post Graduate year at the Ontario Hockey Academy. Going through my senior year I wasn’t sure if I was mature enough or skilled enough to play NCAA hockey. Although I had a few school contact me I had no confirmed offers. I made the decision to do a PG year to work on my academics, my speed, strength and skill development. Looking at it now, it was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. The extra year definitely made the difference of the life-altering experience that i would have never done if i left after my senior.
