Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Hockey difference between the Academy and a Traditional Prep School?

Now here is the thing about prep school hockey. Their season starts mid-November and runs through February. They play roughly 25 games and are in a few tournaments. The schools require students to participate in a sport or other activity during each sporting season, whether you have ever played that sport or not. Many preps have classes on Saturday, and require students to be back on campus by a certain time on Sunday. Obviously their mission is to develop well rounded students for the demands of elite level colleges. It is not to develop elite level hockey players. The Academy develops players for both academics and a full hockey season, similar to college level teams. Our goal is to help every participant excel.

Can I finish a diploma already begun at another high school or through home study?

Credits that you've earned from other accredited high school programs may be transferable for an Ontario Secondary School Degree. This may also be true for learning you've completed through home schooling or in other nontraditional settings. Our academic advisor will help you determine how credits from course work you've already completed in another high school program can apply to our diploma requirements.

What grades are available at the Academy?

School and boarding is available primarily for Grades 9 to 12. However, we can accommodate grade 7 and 8 students on a case by case basis.

Does my child have classes on Saturdays?

No. We have a rigorous academic program that we fit into a Monday through Friday class schedule and around the athletic schedule. So, students don’t miss classes due to sports competition or have to do make up work on the weekends. We provide laptops for students to use during extended road trips.

Is the campus safe?

The Academy is located in the small town of Cornwall Ontario on the St. Lawrence River bordering Canada and the United States. Cornwall provides a very safe, family friendly environment, which gives the students the opportunity to socialize. All students are to report when leaving and returning to campus. On campus, there is 24hr supervision.

Does the school have a religious affiliation?
All faiths are respected. Several Chapels are available nearby for students. We have information on services for different religions.

Do students wear a school uniform?

No. But, everyone wears comfortable and acceptable clothing.

Do you offer scholarships?

We do not offer scholarships but financial aid is available on a case by case basis.

What if I have difficulties with a certain subject or a learning disability?

The Academy does not have a special program for students with learning disabilities. However, varying forms of assistance, such as tutoring and extra time for tests, will be provided to those who require it.

What is the average class size?

Most of our class sizes range from 6 to 8 students.

Is there an application deadline?
We continue to accept applications until all available spots in the entering class are full. When a grade becomes full, we create a waiting list from which we may draw students should a space become available.

Do I need to bring a laptop to school?
No. The school is fully equipped.

What is your drug and alcohol policy?
The Academy has a stringent drugs and alcohol policy. Simply put, we have a zero tolerance policy. All student athletes will be required to read and sign the student handbook which details our policy.

Will the Academy help me with Canadian and US recruiting?
Yes. The Academy will provide student-athletes with the promotional support and career guidance to help you get into the schools of your choice.
Our tournament schedule is selected to provide maximum exposure and our college visits ensure you will be seen.
