The Academy's mandate is
simple
Excellent Academic Curriculum
To achieve academic excellence, the
Ontario Hockey Academy offers the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). The
Academy is a member of the Ontario Federation of Independent Schools and adheres
to all policies and follows the
university preparatory curriculum as set forth by Ontario's Ministry of
Education.
Our academic program is designed for
students not only to be prepared for college, but also to succeed in college. We
offer individualized instruction and tutoring in all our courses to ensure our
students maximize their learning potential. For advanced students, we offer
independent study utilizing undergraduate courses from several US colleges and
universities.
All
OHA core courses are NCAA approved to ensure
NCAA
student eligibility requirements are met. Together with a
faculty that has a wide and broad range of expertise,
we are
ready and eager to help our students reach their goals.
High
Tech World
We had one thing in mind when building new
facilities and renovating our existing structures. It was to ensure that our
students' current and
future educational goals are met. We’ve
created classrooms, study spaces and academic areas that keep pace with the high-tech world of
today and meet the needs of
tomorrow. This gives our students an edge in college and beyond. As a student, you’ll
have extensive access to a variety of state-of-the-art computers,
extensive
software, specialty computer courses (e.g.
desktop publishing and web design), and a
multimedia lab with an interactive
smart board.
Typical Academic Day
The academic
portion of the day is highly structured, consisting of (4) seventy minute
periods for core course instruction every morning, five days a week. An
additional time is set aside for extra tutoring, remedial help, college
counseling and our SAT prep program. A nightly 1 hr compulsory
study hall enables students to get homework done, read literature, or study
for tests and exams. Faculty teachers are on duty during this time to provide
extra help or to answer questions.
But it’s not all
work. We visit different universities throughout the year where our students can
experience college for a day and talk with admissions officers, professors and
other student athletes. Typically, we schedule trips to St. Lawrence University,
Clarkson University, the University of Vermont and McGill University.
Post Secondary Test Preparation
We make
every effort to help our students get into the universities of their choice. To
accomplish this, we offer a SAT prep course. Each year, our
upper level students are
required to take either the SAT I or SAT II
exam.
Small Classes
Picture this: Small classes of 6 to 10 students.
Teachers interacting with students on a one-to-one and laughter coming
from the classroom as students conduct a lively debate. In this
type of environment, learning is made easier. The result is higher retention
rates, better understanding and springboard for the next level. And that's our
goal.
Student Years
For most
students, their High School years are a time of change and challenge.
For student-athletes these years are critical for honing their hockey skills,
developing study skills and, most importantly, learning time management. If
you are an elite student-athlete who is serious about obtaining a university
scholarship and taking your abilities to the next level, we may be for you. Don't leave
your future to
chance - contact us today!
